    How do I install roof windows? Complete step-by-step guide

    Introduction {#introduction}

    Installing roof windows is an investment that significantly affects the comfort of the attic. Correct installation not only provides optimal light into the room, but also ensures air-tightness, thermal and acoustic insulation. In this guide, we present all the steps necessary for professional roof window installation. Reading time: 12 minutes Difficulty level: Medium Required tools: Saw, screwdriver, spirit level, installation tape

    Preparing for installation {#prepare-for-installation}

    ### Tools and materials Make sure you have all the necessary tools before starting work: - Hand saw or electric saw - Phillips and flathead screwdriver - Building level (minimum 80 cm) - Rolling tape measure (5m) - Carpenter's pencil - Vapour-proof mounting tape - Low-density mounting foam - Mounting angles (if not included with the window) - Mounting screws ### Safety first ** IMPORTANT:** Working at height involves risks! Remember: - Stable scaffolding or ladder - Anti-tip belay - Precipitation protection for the work area - Adequate lighting - Assistance of a second person during installation

    Step 1: Preparing the opening in the roof {#step-1-preparing-opening-in-roof}

    ### Measure and cut out 1. Mark the window outline according to the manufacturer's instructions 2. Check the dimensions - add 2-3 cm of installation slack 3. Remove the tiles at the planned opening 4. Cut the vapour-permeable membrane and mineral wool 5. Cut the roof battens with a saw (keep the distances according to the instructions) Tip: Always start cutting from inside the room - easier to control the outline.

    Step 2: Install angle brackets {#step-2-mount-angle brackets}

    Mounting angles are a key component that: - Facilitates the correct positioning of the window - Provides structural stability - Allows for quick adjustment ### Installing angle brackets: 1. Fit the angle brackets into the pre-prepared rebates in the window frame 2. Make sure they are fixed perpendicular to the frame 3. Tighten the fixing screws (do not tighten rigidly - leave slack for adjustment)

    Step 3: Fit the window into the opening {#step-3-fit-window-in-opening}

    ### Correct positioning 1. Insert window into opening from outside (requires assistance from a second person) 2. Apply spacer wedges at bottom for initial stabilisation 3. Check level in two planes (vertical and horizontal) 4. Adjust position with mounting brackets 5. Tighten brackets temporarily to rafters NOTE: Window must be perfectly aligned vertically and horizontally - this guarantees correct operation!

    Step 4: Install flashing {#step-4-mounting-flashing-flange}

    The flashing (apron) ensures a tight connection between the window and the roof: 1. Unpack the flashing (make sure it fits your type of roofing) 2. Install the bottom part of the flashing - under the tiles 3. Then the side parts - under the tiles on the sides 4. Finally the top part - on the tiles 5. Make sure you have the correct overlap (at least 10cm) Most common mistake: Reverse installation order - water then runs UNDER the flashing instead of ON it!

    Step 5: Seal joints {#step-5-seal-joints}

    ### Interior sealing 1. Fit vapour-permeable tape around window frame 2. Apply mounting foam in gaps (low-clearance!) 3. After foam has hardened, trim excess with knife 4. Fit internal trim tape (decorative frames) ### Exterior sealing 1. Check flashing for tightness 2. If necessary, apply additional silicone gasket 3. Restore tiles around window

    Step 6: Install eaves and accessories {#step-6-mount-eaves-and-accessories}

    Condensation drip cap 1. Fit drip cap under the bottom of the window 2.

    Provides condensation drainage to the outside ### Additional accessories (optional) - Exterior roller blinds or shutters - Mosquito net - Raising flange (for high profile roofing)

    Step 7: Operational check {#step-7-operational-check}

    Once the installation is complete, check: - ✅ Opening/Closing - the sash rotates smoothly without jamming - ✅ Tightness - no leakage during rain simulation (water jet from the hose) - ✅ Ventilation - the ventilator works properly - ✅ Locking - the security lock works - ✅ Esthetics - no damage, everything evenly fitted

    ##Most common errors during installation {#Most common errors during installation}

    ❌ Error 1: Hole too small Effect: Window is "forcibly" pushed in, does not close, glass may break. Solution: Always leave 2-3 cm of installation play! ### ❌ Error 2: Incorrect level ** Effect:** Window opens or closes by itself, water runs down inside. Solution: Use a long spirit level (min. 80 cm) and check in 2 planes. ### ❌ Error 3: Wrong sequence of flashing installation ** Effect:** Water seeps under the flashing = flooding in attic. Solution: Always install from the bottom up! Bottom part UNDER the tiles, top part ON the tiles. ### ❌ Mistake 4: Lack of damp-proofing ** Effect:** Roof truss rot, mould. Solution: Vapour-permeable tape + low-density foam MUST be used!

    When is it better to trust a professional? {when is it better to trust a professional?}

    Installing roof windows is possible for someone with basic building skills, but there are situations where it is worth using a professional: - ⚠️ Steep roofs (over 60°) - ⚠️ Difficult access (tall buildings, no scaffolding) - ⚠️ Lack of experience in roofing work - ⚠️ Special windows (very large, non-standard shapes) - ⚠️ Guarantee - some manufacturers require installation by a certified professional

    Summary {#summary}

    Proper installation of roof windows is the key to comfortable use of your attic for many years to come. Remember the most important rules: 1. Safety - secure your work area 2. Precision - measure twice, cut once 3. Level - the window must be perfectly level 4. Tightness - tapes + foam + flashing = guaranteed dry attic 5. Patience - take your time, this is not a race If you have doubts or feel unsure - call our specialists. They will advise you or carry out the installation professionally!
