Roof Windows – Which Windows to Choose for Usable Attics? Guide and Building Standards
Roof windows (sloping) allow natural light and fresh air to enter the interior, just like classic facade windows. However, their construction and installation method in the roof slope are completely different and subject to strict building regulations. Methods of Opening Roof Windows – Adapting to Needs
Sloping windows differ in their opening methods, which directly affects the convenience of their daily use. We can choose from:
Rotating – most commonly used in attics. They open around a pivot axis located halfway up the sash. The ability to rotate the sash 180 degrees greatly facilitates safe cleaning from inside the room. They are opened using handles or grips (at the bottom or top of the sash).
Tilt – with the pivot axis located at the top edge of the frame. When opened, the sash does not "enter" the room. They are closed and opened using handles mounted at the bottom of the sash.
Rotating-tilt (flap-rotating) – very functional models with two pivot axes: in the middle of the frame and at the top edge. They can be opened with a handle at the bottom (tilt function) or rotated for cleaning after releasing the lock (rotating function).
Hinged (roof hatches) – windows that open outward (to the side), on hinges attached to the side edge of the frame. They provide a safe exit to the roof.
Fixed (non-opening) – used solely for additional lighting of rooms. Their cleaning from the outside is only possible when they are combined with opening windows in so-called assemblies.
Knee walls – combining the features of vertical and sloping windows, installed in the knee wall of the roof. They reach close to the floor, which greatly illuminates and visually enlarges the interior.
Selection and Placement of Roof Windows in Light of Regulations
When choosing roof windows, their size and proper placement are crucial, as regulated by Polish building law.
Lighting Standard (Regulation on WT): In rooms intended for permanent human occupancy (e.g., bedrooms, living rooms, children's rooms), the ratio of the window area in the light of the frame to the floor area should be at least 1:8.
For example – a room with an area of 16 m² should be illuminated by windows with a total glass area of at least 2 m². The amount of light entering the room can be increased by installing several windows next to each other (in horizontal assemblies) or above each other (in vertical assemblies). However, it is worth remembering about the energy balance – larger glazing means better lighting, but also the necessity of using external blinds to avoid overheating the interior in summer.
At What Height Should Sloping Windows Be Installed?
Building regulations (Technical Conditions) and ergonomic principles also define the optimal installation height. To ensure safety and visual contact with the surroundings, the bottom edge of the window should be approximately 90-100 cm from the floor. This allows a standing or sitting person to look freely out the window and avoid feeling isolated from the outside world. The top edge of the window should be at a height of about 200 cm, which facilitates operating the upper locking system.
Technical Parameters – Compliance with Technical Conditions (WT 2021)
Modern construction places a huge emphasis on energy efficiency.
Since 2021, stricter thermal standards (WT 2021) have been in effect. The heat transfer coefficient (Uw) for roof windows must not exceed a value of 1.1 W/(m²K). When choosing models with enhanced energy standards (e.g.
three-pane windows, with Uw below 1.0 W/(m²K)), we gain a guarantee of better insulation, which will significantly reduce heating costs in winter.
Acoustic properties of windows (Rw coefficient) are also important. Damping noise from the street or the sound of raindrops is particularly important in the attic, where a bedroom has been arranged.
Material: PVC, wood, or aluminum?
The choice of material depends on the purpose of the room and the interior style:
PVC windows (e.g., models from the KPVCN N22, KPVCU N22, KPVCP N22, KPVCL N22 series) – characterized by very high moisture resistance and excellent thermal insulation. They are maintenance-free and ideal for so-called wet rooms: bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry rooms in the attic.
Wooden windows – valued for their natural, noble appearance. They require periodic maintenance of the varnish but add character to bedrooms and living rooms in traditionally styled homes.
Aluminum joinery – less popular in attics of single-family homes, but stunning with its minimalist design and very high structural durability.
Controlling roof windows
The last criterion is the method of operation. Among the available models, there are manually operated windows (using ergonomic handles or telescopic rods for windows installed high) and automatically.
Automatic systems (Smart Home), controlled via a remote, smartphone app, or wall switch, are an ideal solution for high rooms and hard-to-reach places. They are often additionally equipped with rain sensors that automatically close the window in case of sudden weather changes.
