How to position roof windows? Installation height and position

Roof windows - principles for correct positioning in the roof

Roof windows are an integral part of modern construction. They are also successfully used in the conversion of unused attics for residential purposes. In order for roof windows to fulfil their full function - provide sufficient light, ensure good visibility and improve the energy balance of the building - they must be properly installed.

What should you bear in mind when choosing the size, number and installation location of roof windows? Find out the most important rules!

Roof window size vs. room size

A key aspect to consider when choosing roof windows is the size of the room in question. Accepted building standards indicate that adequate interior lighting is determined by the ratio of glazed area to floor area.

    • Usable attics (living rooms, bedrooms): This ratio should be at least 1:8. In practice, this means that a 12 m² room should be illuminated by a window with a glazing area of at least 1.2 m².

    • Accessory rooms (bathrooms, dressing rooms, corridors): The ratio required is at least 1:12.

The golden rule of light: When deciding where to place windows, it is worth bearing in mind that better and more even interior light (up to 20 % more light) will be provided by ** several smaller windows installed at intervals**, instead of one very large window.

    Roof angle vs. window length

The size of the roof window should be determined by the angle of the roof slope. The relationship is simple: the lower the roof angle (flatter roof), the longer the window should be to provide an adequate field of view for a standing person.

Optimum installation height of roof windows

The installation height of roof windows, which is precisely defined by building regulations, is also important for the comfort and safety of the user.

    • For buildings less than 25 m in height: The distance from the bottom edge of the opening window to the floor should be a minimum of 85 cm.

    • For buildings over 25 m in height: This distance increases to at least 110 cm.

    • Top edge of window: Should be approximately 220 cm above the floor.

A correctly installed window allows the person standing to look freely not only at the sky but also in front of him or herself, effectively minimising the feeling of isolation from the outside world. It also allows a desk, bed or bath to be placed freely under the window without the risk of hitting one's head on the open sash.

High installation? Get to know the OKPOL IQ series of intelligent roof windows

It is often the case that the architecture of the attic (e.g. high staircases or living rooms with a mezzanine) forces windows to be installed high out of reach. In such situations, the ideal solution is remote-controlled windows, equipped with discreet electric actuators. In OKPOL's offer you will find a modern IQ window series, tailored to the specifics of each room:

    • Model ISC IQ (wooden windows): Equipped with an integrated drive, allowing free control with a convenient remote control. They fit perfectly into the aesthetics of classic bedrooms and living rooms.

    • IGCV IQ model (multi-chambered PVC windows): Completely moisture-resistant, automated solution that guarantees the full comfort of remote control and efficient ventilation. An excellent choice for hard-to-reach areas in high bathrooms or kitchens.

Situation of windows vs. facing the world

When planning the placement of your roof windows, don't forget about the directions of the world. These will not only affect the quality of light, but also the degree to which the loft heats up.

    • Southern exposure: Guarantees optimal and strong light almost all day long. However, it causes a significant increase in the interior temperature (especially in summer). A way to increase comfort is to install external blinds or awnings.

    • Western exposure: Light enters the rooms mainly in the afternoon, heating the interior strongly before the evening.

    • Eastern exposure: Provides excellent light early in the morning, making it easier to wake up, and protects against overheating in the afternoon.

    • Northern exposure: Provides cool, diffuse and even light throughout the day. Does not cause the loft to heat up, which is ideal for home offices and studios (the light does not fatigue the eyes or reflect in monitors).

Combining roof windows - more light and space

A great idea to dramatically increase the amount of light entering the loft is to install several windows side by side (horizontally) or above each other (vertically). This solution is gaining popularity among investors who value original, open designs.

An interesting, modern effect may also be achieved by combining standard roof windows with bend windows (vertical). The resulting large-format glazing perfectly illuminates rooms, optically enlarges them and is an extremely effective architectural detail of each block.
