Roof hatch installation - principles, location and step-by-step instructions

    Rules for Installing Roof Hatches

Roof hatches, allowing for comfortable and safe access to the roof, are becoming increasingly popular among investors. It's no wonder – much of this is due to the functionality of the available models of roof windows on the market, as well as their aesthetics. Thanks to the latter, roof hatches work perfectly not only in unused attics but also in those arranged for residential purposes. We provide tips on how to plan the installation of a roof hatch!

    Location of the Roof Hatch

A properly selected and correctly installed hatch will successfully fulfill the functions of traditional roof windows. Therefore, before starting the installation work, it is necessary to designate the optimal place for its mounting. It is best if this issue is determined by the architect during the house design phase.

First of all, the installation of the roof hatch is possible on various types of roofing – particularly on roofs with a slope of 15-60%. For safety reasons, it is recommended to install the collar no lower than 85 cm from the floor of the attic room.

According to accepted principles, the location of the roof hatch should guarantee free and safe access to the roof without the need for a ladder. If this is not possible, and the installation location of the hatch is far from the chimney, additional safety measures will be necessary – such as steps and chimney benches.

Installing the Roof Hatch – DIY or by a Specialist

Installing a roof hatch is not particularly challenging. Especially in newly constructed buildings, where it does not require interference with the structure of the finished roof. However, it is important to remember the necessity of equipping the hatch with a special collar to ensure the tightness of the attachment to the roof surface. All installation work must be carried out with great precision – the smallest gaps will allow cold air to infiltrate the attic. Additionally, an unsealed covering is at risk of water penetration and moisture accumulation. It also weakens the structure of the roof itself.

Self-installation of the roof hatch is possible – just follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Most models are installed in a similar way – relatively easily and quickly. Basic tools are necessary for the installation: a level or plumb bob, a knife, a screwdriver, screws, nails, and an angle grinder. Of course, the installation of the hatch can also be entrusted to specialists. This is a good idea if working at heights is not our forte or if we lack basic technical skills. Installation by professionals is also recommended in the case of existing roofs, when it is necessary to remove both the roofing and insulation layers.

    Roof Hatch Installation Instructions

Installing a roof hatch step by step:

    1. Determining the Installation Location of the Roof Hatch

The first step is to choose the installation location of the roof hatch – optimal in terms of its use. It is best if the roof window is directly adjacent to the chimney. It is also worth ensuring that there are no other structural elements on the roof plane at the exit that could hinder access to the roof.

    1. Marking the Lines and Removing the Sheathing

Knowing the installation location of the roof hatch, we can move on to the next stage. This involves marking lines on the attic ceiling corresponding to the size of the window opening. A level and plumb bob will help us accurately draw the lines. Next, we remove the insulation and cut the roofing membrane. If there are tiles on the roof, we cut them with an angle grinder.

    1. Reinforcing the Roof

In the next stage of installing the roof hatch, we apply additional reinforcements to the roof. Above and below the window, we attach additional battens to the rafters or counter-battens for this purpose. A level will help us precisely position the battens.

Next, we roll the roofing membrane outward and attach it to the battens around the opening.

    1. Fitting the roof hatch

The installation opening is now fully prepared for the installation of the roof hatch. From the attic side, we secure it using screws and brackets, plates, or grips – fasteners provided by the manufacturer along with the window.

    1. Installation of the protective collar

After securing the roof hatch, we need to attach the protective collar, located below the window on its outer side. Simply peel off the protective tape and press the collar firmly against the roof covering.

    1. Securing the hatch from the outside

The next step is to attach the roof hatch from the roof side. Again, screws or nails will be useful. However, be careful not to damage the roofing membrane during the process.

    1. Laying the roof covering

Finally, we only need to re-lay the roof covering. After placing it on the roof, use a knife to remove any excess rubber that ensures waterproofing. For roofs with bituminous shingles, it is advisable to secure the installation area with a special adhesive.
